Tafi Atome - Photo Gallery

Location

From the main Accra-Hohoe road, a small, untarred road runs westwards for 5 km from Logba Alakpeti, around 43 km south of Hohoe. It leads to Tafi Atome, a small village with about 850 inhabitants, surrounded by an indigenous tropical forest with very high floral concentration.

History

The forest is home to about 300 of the endangered True Mona Monkeys. From the time when the ancestors arrived about 200 years ago, they have protected the monkeys which they believed to be messengers to the gods. In the late 1980s, however, the villagers lost their reverence for the animals due to an erosion of traditional beliefs by Christianity. In order to prove that they no longer feared the monkeys, they started to destroy the forest in search for firewood and farmland, and even killed many of the animals. Recognizing the potential value of the endangered species for tourism purposes, a coalition of villagers, public institutions and NGOs created a sanctuary in 1993. Since then, the animals as well as the forest in which they live were again under protection.

Main Attractions

Tafi Atome can be described as the “model” of a multi-faceted CBE project. Visitors can experience the about 300 monkeys on a guided walk in the forest. Sometimes, they even enter the village and make a great fuss on the house roofs. Other nature activities include forest walks, mountainbike trips, and a visit to a nature trail of medicinal plants.

Guides also offer a tour of the village, introducing daily activities such as weaving, palm oil production, or fufu pounding. Visitors can enjoy learning sessions with regards to the social activities in the village. These include drumming, cooking and language lessons. In the evenings, the villagers offer an entertainment programme for the guests to watch and participate. Among others, there are options which include drumming and dancing with the whole village, or listening to a storyteller who narrates old animal fables around a bonfire. Two trained cooks cater for the guests, while few local spots serve soft drinks and alcoholic beverages, including the local hot stuff, popularly known as “Kill me quick” or Akpeteshie. For the night, the guests can choose between a community-owned guesthouse and several homestays with local families.
