Kpledzo

Location

The mysterious palm tree is located a little south of Kpledzo on the main Accra-Hohoe road. It is about half way between Logba Alakpeti, from where the road leads to Tafi Atome, and Golokwati junction. Currently, there is no signpost leading to the palm tree, making it very difficult to find. From the main road, a small footpath leads to the house of the farmer Mr. Awudi and further on to the tree. The entire walk takes less than five minutes.

History

Mr. Kudzordzi Awudi, a local farmer, planted several palm trees in 1963. To his surprise, one of them developed three branches, each bearing fruits. The fruits, however, remained in their green state for three years. When a wild bush fire swept through the farm in 1983, it also burnt down the mysterious palm tree. It came back to life and, this time, developed four branches. Later, it added another three, making it a total of seven branches, each bearing fruits. Unfortunately, a recent thunderstorm caused one of them to break, so that the tree currently has six branches. Mr. Awudi does not harvest the fruits out of reverence for the tree’s unusual nature.

The Place

Mr. Awudi lives at his house with his daughter and two grand children. He is a subsistence farmer who usually works on the surrounding fields or at the house. There are some fruit trees, including bananas and chiku, an apple-like yellowish fruit, as well as some domestic animals. The place has a traditional roofed outdoor kitchen with a triangular mud stove. A footpath leads through a wild piece of land to a large open field, at the far end of which grows the palm tree.

Main Attractions

Currently, the only attraction is the mysterious palm tree. A quick stopover to admire the tree and take a picture would take little more than 15 minutes. The farmer and his daughter might, however, be able to display several traditional activities centred on palm trees, including the production of palm wine and palm oil. An introduction to the life at a small farm house could also have some appeal to the one or other visitor.

Regular Tourist Activities

Currently, the only regular tourist activity is a short stopover in order to visit the palm tree and take a picture.
