Dr. Noamesi (Hohoe)

Location

Dr. Noamesi’s Herbal Treatment and Research Centre is located at the northern outskirts of Hohoe on the right side of the main Hohoe-Jasikan road.

Dr. Noamesi

Born in 1917, Dr. Gottlieb Kofi Noamesi has managed to combine state of the art Western medicine with the Ghanaian herbal traditions in order to become a world leader in herbal treatment and research. His outstanding academic credentials include a BSc in Biology (Lakeland College, Sheboygan, Wisconsin), an MSc in Botany and Zoology (University of Wisconsin, Madison), a PhD in Taxonomic Botany (University of Wisconsin, Madison) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Parasitology and Entomology (University of London).

In the 1960s he conducted extensive research on river blindness, a disease which – mainly owing to him – is now eradicated in the northern parts of Ghana. In the 1970s he worked as a biology and entomology consultant for the World Health Organisation. After 18 years of service in the public sector, he decided in 1977 to start a private business and devote his time to research on plant medicine, following the tradition of his father who, in his leisure time, worked as a herbal doctor.

Dr. Noamesi’s life is portrayed in a book entitled “Outstanding Ewes of the 20th Century” (Woeli Publishing Service, Accra, 2002).

Regular Tourist Activities

Dr. Noamesi is always happy to receive new patients and other interested visitors. His health centre is open for emergencies night and day. Even sceptical visitors are often captured by the authority of Dr. Noamesi and develop the desire to speak with him about their big or small ailments.

The centre also has its own little botanical garden, and Seth K. Agbley, the centre’s manager, will gladly introduce the various plants to visitors. A tour of the centre further includes a visit to the medicine production rooms where the employees develop capsules, powders and syrups.

It is also possible to join the centre’s team on a herb collection tour into the forests.

Information for the Visitor

Dr. Noamesi currently does not take an entrance fee to visit his centre and the botanical garden, a fact that is likely to change soon. Many visitors will buy some of his generally very inexpensive medicine. It is also possible to order larger quantities of a certain product in advance.
